A Chinese man dedicated to looking after his cancer-stricken wife, and who spent two million yuan (US$280,000) on her treatment while taking care of their toddler daughter, has moved millions online.
Deng Youcai, 30, from southern China’s Guangxi province, fell in love at first sight with Ye Meidi, at a friend’s wedding in 2016.
Deng, whose parents divorced and remarried when he was little, dropped out of school at a young age and was a migrant worker in a big city.
Ye also dropped out of university after she was diagnosed with glioma, a type of brain tumour with a more than 90 per cent recurrence rate.

Deng was attracted to Ye’s personality, and pursued her despite knowing she was ill.
Ye initially rejected him, but said yes after he said he was prepared to fight her illness with her.
They got married in 2019, and at the wedding, Deng told Ye: “I will treat you in the best ways in the world.”
He did not go back on his word, and in 2021, they became parents to a daughter named Hanhan.
A year later, Ye’s glioma flared up, and before she fell into a coma, she asked Deng to let her die because they would not be able to afford the treatment.

Deng insisted on saving her, but Ye remained in a vegetative state despite two rounds of surgery, and doctors suggested that they give up.
Deng almost did. He brought her home. The family came to say goodbye, and their daughter Hanhan kissed her on her cheek.
He filmed the moment and posted it on social media. The video went viral, with many people online encouraging them and donating money. Deng took Ye back to the hospital and after three months, Ye miraculously recovered consciousness, and in another two months, she spoke again.
“Thank you” was reportedly the first thing that Ye said to Deng. Deng resigned from his job to look after Ye and Hanhan at home by himself.
He helped her with walking every day, and often sang and danced for her to cheer her up.

Ye can now walk by herself, and even manages a street stall.
The couple’s social media accounts have nearly 2 million followers in total. They also earn a living from live-streaming sales.
One online observer said of the pair: “There are so many healthy but unhappy couples, but these two, despite so many difficulties, have made their lives full of love and hope.”
