A market owner in China has sparked jealousy online after distributing nearly 10 million yuan (US$1.4 million) in profits from gold futures investments among his more than 2,000 employees, including cooks and cleaners.
Liu Mingjun is a former musician who became an entrepreneur in 2021 and founded the Ronghe 1+1 Fresh Supermarket chain in Shanxi province, northern China.
Since its opening, Liu’s business has expanded to include 33 outlets in Shanxi province and has even extended into neighbouring Henan province, employing a total of 2,040 staff.
In an interview with Jiupai News on April 26, Liu said that he has distributed a total of 9.13 million yuan (US$1.25 million) in profits, which came from a one-year investment in gold futures.

“I specialise in futures trading and have been doing so for 20 years, but this is the first time I have made this much,” he said.
A shop manager confirmed that even cleaners and cooks received a share of the bonus, with the amount based on their time with the company.
Staff who have worked for the company for more than two years received 10,000 yuan (US$1,400), while those with one to two years of tenure received 2,000 yuan as “travel compensation” and two days of leave.
Even those with less than a year of service received 1,000 yuan and two days of leave.
Trending online videos also captured a pile of cash on a table, with employees lining up to receive their share while visibly filled with joy and happiness.
“When I first heard about this, I thought our boss was drunk,” one employee said.
Liu said that the cash distribution was not intended to motivate employees to work harder but to fulfil a long-held personal vision.
He said that he had been contemplating sharing his wealth with employees for two years and had mentioned it during employee training sessions.
“If one day I am rich, I will share it with everyone. It comes from the heart and is not just an empty promise,” he said.
“I will do my best to make sure my employees feel happy,” Liu said, adding: “This profit distribution will definitely not be the last time.”

The story has gained significant attention online, with many netizens expressing their admiration and jealousy.
“This is the kind of boss every employee dreams of,” one online observer said.
“If I worked here, I would definitely work 10 times harder,” added another.
