A man was arrested after he allegedly coughed at train passengers and refused to wear a mask. A video showed a police officer asking the man to wear a face-covering on a Wirral line service at Lime Street Station in Liverpool on Wednesday. He refused after claiming he had a ‘medical condition’. He then struggled with the policeman while being detained before he was pepper-sprayed.
The man was later restrained when other officers arrived. British Transport Police said in a statement: ‘A man has been charged with threatening behaviour and assaulting a police officer on a Merseyrail train to Liverpool Lime Street station. ‘The incident happened at around 3.20pm on Wednesday 2 September. ‘Officers had responded to a report of a man coughing at two passengers. ‘He will appear at Liverpool and Knowsley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 6 January 2021.’
Passengers using public transport in England are legally required to wear a face-covering or they could be fined. There’s an exception for people who cannot wear a mask due a medical condition.
