A man named Mark Zuckerberg is suing Meta because he says his Facebook pages keep getting suspended due to his name.
This Mark Zuckerberg is a bankruptcy attorney in Indianapolis and says the page suspensions are hurting his business.
While the attorney and the tech titan have different middle names – Steven and Elliot, respectively – the lawyer said having the same name as Facebook’s founder is a nightmare.
Zuckerberg is suing Meta for negligence and breach of contract because Facebook keeps shutting down his pages, accusing him of “impersonating a celebrity.”
Meta also accuses him of “using a false name,” which Zuckerberg says, “I’ve had way longer than he [the Facebook founder] has.”
“I’ve got better things to do than sue Facebook. And they have more money and more lawyers and more resources than I do. I’d rather not pick a fight with them, but I don’t know how else to make them stop,” Zuckerberg said.
His business account has been shut down five times in the last eight years, and his personal account has been shut down four times.
Currently, his business page is suspended.
“Facebook jail,” he calls it.
Emails from Meta show apologies, but Zuckerberg says it still takes him months to get back on Facebook. And then when he does, he gets suspended again.
“The last time they did it, it was over six months before I got my account turned back on. So, I don’t know how else to get their attention,” he said.
Zuckerberg said getting kicked off Facebook has cost him thousands of dollars in advertising for his law practice.
“It’s like buying a billboard on the side of the highway, paying the people for the billboard, and then they come and put a giant blanket over it, and you don’t get the benefit of what you paid for. It’s not fair. It’s not right and they need to stop,” he said.
The lawsuit is asking Meta to keep his accounts on and to pay for attorney fees and lost advertising money.
Meanwhile, in a statement, a Meta spokesperson said the company is reinstating his business account after finding it had been “disabled in error.”
Meta said they appreciate Zuckerberg’s patience and are working to try to prevent it from happening again.
