From the Hoover Dam in Arizona to the Inguri Dam in Georgia, many of the world's most famous dams are risk of collapsing, a worrying new report has warned. Most of the 58,700 largest dams worldwide were constructed between the 1930s and 1970s, making them between 50 and 90 years old.However, most were only designed to last for 50 to 100 years, meaning they are now reaching the end of their lifespans. Worryingly, if these dams did collapse, they'd release up to 8,300 cubic kilometres of water - enough to fill the Grand Canyon twice over. Scientists in Beijing have developed a new gene therapy which can reverse some of the effects of ageing in mice and extend their lifespans, findings which may one day contribute to similar treatment for humans. The method, detailed in a paper in the Science Translational Medicine journal earlier this month, involves inactivating a gene called kat7 which the scientists found to be a key contributor to cellular ageing. Some cannabis extracts may lower the risk of dying from Covid-19 by preventing a patient's malfunctioning immune system from attacking itself, research suggests. A 'cytokine storm' is a process whereby the immune system goes haywire and attacks healthy tissue instead of just the virus. In many severe Covid cases, this is what proves fatal, and finding a way to dampen this process has been a priority for doctors.
