I am Manoj — I work at a small mineral water delivery agency in a town in Uttar Pradesh. The job is certainly tough, but it helps me earn a steady livelihood. Among my many customers, there is a 75-year-old man who left an unforgettable impression on me.
He orders 14 bottles of 20 liters mineral water every day, regularly, without missing a single day. When I first received the order, I thought maybe he had opened a restaurant or was supplying a group. But when I reached the address, I saw it was a small, old house at the end of a deserted lane.
The strange thing was, he never let me inside — he just opened the door slightly and handed over the money in an envelope. I placed the 14 bottles at the doorstep and turned away, hearing no sound from inside. I kept wondering: how can a lonely old man use so much water every day? After about half a month, the matter became even more suspicious.
Usually, a large family uses only 1-2 bottles of water per week, but this elderly man was using 14 bottles daily. Once, I quietly asked him: “Sir, why do you use so much water?”
He just smiled lightly, didn’t answer, and quietly closed the door. There was something mysterious about his smile that made me think for a long time.
I began to worry: Is someone taking advantage of him? Or is something unusual happening in that house? After thinking for many days, I decided to call 112 and report it.
The next day, I arrived at the house with some local police officers. When I knocked on the door, the elderly man calmly came out. But when the police asked to inspect inside, he hesitated and then slowly nodded.
The door opened a little… and we were all stunned.
Inside, there was no frightening scene. Instead, dozens of large plastic bottles neatly arranged, filled with pure mineral water. Each bottle was carefully labeled: “For neighbors,” “For the public primary school,” “For the PHC health center,” “For the Anganwadi,” “For the Hanuman temple near the market”
The police and I were amazed. Seeing our expressions, the old man smiled softly and said:
— I am old, I can’t do much. I just feel that the poor people around here lack clean water. So, I ordered a lot of water, and every day I ask the neighborhood children to come and take water and distribute it. The needy get free drinking water.
Hearing this, my eyes welled up. It turned out that the elderly man had quietly been doing charity all this while. Those 14 bottles of water every day were his way of showing love for the poor and thirsty children during the scorching heat.
One of the policemen asked emotionally:
— You do such a noble deed. But why didn’t you tell anyone, when so many people were worried?
The old man smiled gently, his voice trembling:
— I don’t want to show off. As long as everyone has clean water to drink, I am at peace.
It turned out he was a former soldier of the Indian Army. Having fought in wars, he understood the value of every drop of water. When he grew old, he used his pension to buy mineral water and provide it to everyone around him.
That day, both the police and I were moved. The image of that 75-year-old man — thin but kind-hearted — was something we would never forget.
Since then, I have not been just a “water deliverer.” I actively helped him deliver water to distribution centers and share it with people. Slowly, many people in the town heard the story and joined in. Many donors contributed funds to help continue his charitable work.
A month later, when I returned, I saw more activity in his courtyard. Many children, carrying water bottles, laughing, playing, and talking innocently. Next to him was an old man with white hair and eyes shining with happiness.
Suddenly I realized: sometimes, behind things that seem strange, there are beautiful truths hidden. If I hadn’t been suspicious that day and hadn’t called the police, I would never have guessed that behind that half-closed door was such a compassionate heart.
And whenever I remember “the image of that 75-year-old man who ordered 14 bottles of mineral water every day,” my heart fills with joy.
Amidst the rush of life, there are still people who quietly sow seeds of goodness, making this world more trustworthy and beautiful.
