Ranan Lurie couldn’t have drawn a more perfect view from his 63rd-floor Manhattan apartment, which serves as his office and studio.
Now the political cartoonist is about to put the two-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom apartment at Time Warner Center on the market for just under $5 million. The listing is set to be made public in early January, according to agent Danielle Lurie of Compass. Ms. Lurie, the artist’s daughter, is representing the property with Allison Sprouse.
The artist, 87, and his wife, Tamar, purchased the property in 2006 for just under $3 million, according to property records. Tama is a top-selling luxury real estate agent with Coldwell Banker in Greenwich, Connecticut.
“At the time of purchase, there was a line around the block to get in to see this unit because it was a corner unit with amazing Hudson River views,” Mr. Lurie said in a statement. “We had actually gone into contract on another condo in the same building with lesser views—and we chose to give up our deposit and get out of that deal so we could buy this apartment with some of the best views in Manhattan.”
For more than a decade, the space has been a homebase for the artist, Ms. Lurie said. “He has drawn cartoons since he was able to speak and draw,” Ms. Lurie said. “That turned into a career as being the No. 1 most-syndicated political cartoonist in the entire world.” Indeed, for about 10 years, he held the record for being the most widely syndicated political cartoonist in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. His work has been published in more than 1,000 international publications.
“He's also been a journalist,” Ms. Lurie pointed out. The apartment has a wall of photos and drawings of world leaders who have been interviewed by Mr. Lurie.
The 1,433-square-foot apartment has floor-to-ceiling windows in the great room and both bedrooms, framing views of the river and giving the space “perfect sunlight,” Ms. Lurie said. It also has 10-foot ceilings throughout.
The artist and his wife have a home nearby, and have enjoyed the ability to walk between the two properties over the years. But now that it’s time to sell, Ms. Lurie and her parents, both of whom study the market closely, decided on a practical price.
