Abu Dhabi demolishes 220 abandoned buildings
The Abu Dhabi City Municipality (ADM) has announced that a total of 220 buildings have been demolished so far as part of its ongoing crackdown on abandoned structures, while it has issued decisions to take down 272 others.
The municipality has called on owners of abandoned buildings in Abu Dhabi and suburban areas to take corrective actions in dealing with said structures in co-operation with the Municipality and other concerned parties, reported state news agency Wam.
The municipality said that abandoned buildings distort the public appearance of the city and contribute to the pollution of the environment besides causing inconvenience to residents and posing health hazards to nearby inhabitants.
The Abu Dhabi civic body is currently demolishing 37 abandoned buildings and has issued orders to repeal the demolition of 13 buildings. It also placed two buildings under examination, stated the Wam report.
The municipality has also identified abandoned buildings in Abu Dhabi city and the environs of Musaffah and Al Wathba centres comprising shaded industrial plots, commercial outlets, residential buildings and communal housing, it added.
The abandoned buildings are considered a danger to neighbourhood safety and security, and a breeding grounds for insects and rodents.
