Timber! Wooden building fever sweeps Australia
Capital cities across the continent unveil their first timber high-rise projects.
After Japan, Australia appears to have gone gaga for timber buildings.
An office complex in Brisbane, 25 King, has topped out at 10 storeys, builder Lendlease announced on July 20.
The Sydney-based construction and property multinational hailed the AUD140-million (USD103 million), 45-metre-high edifice in Brisbane Showgrounds as the world’s tallest engineered timber office building.
Due for completion in October, 25 King joins similar projects that have sprouted throughout the continent over the past few weeks. Earlier this month, developer AsheMorgan announced the construction of Woodwork, Melbourne’s first timber office building.
With an end value of AUD56 million, the 8,000-square-metre, six-storey edifice near the Melbourne Star Ferris wheel will be made of 80 percent cross laminated timber (CLT).
