This Lao marshland will transform into a modern economic zone
Progress on a USD1.6-billion project to develop a Vientiane marsh
into a new economic growth engine for Laos is gaining ground, The
Phnom Penh Post reported.
Total investment ploughed into the That Luang Marsh Special
Economic Zone (SEZ) in the Lao capital has reached USD200 million
since 2012, revealed Phanchinda Lengsavad, vice-chairwoman of the
zone’s management board.
Four out of 11 condominium projects, which tower for 17 storeys, in
the SEZ have already opened for sale.
Moreover, the project has made progress on 91 percent of land
compensation; road access; installation of utilities; and drainage
system.
In a visit to the site last week, Vientiane Mayor Sinlavong
Khouphaythoune enjoined developers to focus on six “slogans”,
including cleanliness and peace and security, that will pave the path
for the zone’s transformation into a “smart city.”
He also called on the natural resource and environment sectors to
cooperate with the developer in resolving remaining land
compensation issues.
Relevant authorities should also coordinate with contractors in
building a drainage system to high standards, preventing flooding in
turn, the mayor added.
Similar projects in the country include the Boten Dankham SEZ in
Luang Namtha province; Golden Triangle SEZ in Bokeo province;
Phoukhiew SEZ in Khammuan province; Pakxe-Japan SEZ in
Champassak province; and Savan-Seno SEZ in Savannakhet province.
