Japan Government Plans To Help for the Development of Dawei SEZ
Japan Government is planning to help the development plan for the Dawei special economic zone (SEZ) project due to the developed achievements of Thilawa SEZ, according to Mr. Masayukikar Yazawaka, Representative of JICA Myanmar Currently, the Japan Government has been asked for help in drawing up the development master plan for Tanintharyi Region along with a comprehensive development plan for the Dawei special economic zones (SEZ) project. Later, Japan is going to help the project development based on Myanmar Government’s decision, he added.
“We survey the requirements and necessary information such as electricity and industrial development for the development planning of Dawei SEZ. After the survey is finished, we will consider depending on the request from the Myanmar Government regarding the survey of Dawei SEZ,” he said.
The Dawei SEZ will be implemented into two phases. The first phase will be implemented by the Italian-Thai Development Company (ITD), the developer selected to construct the first phase of the Dawei SEZ. In addition, the international developers will be invited to continue the second phase of Dawei SEZ. The first phase comprises small projects and the second phase includes large-scale projects.
Dawei SEZ development project is a part of the Tanintharyi Region’s development master plan drawing up by Japan. It is expected to complete master plan draft in May 2018, said Dr.Myint San, Deputy Chairman of Dawei SEZ Management Committee.
Myanmar-Thailand has signed to implement the Dawei SEZ in 2008. And then, Italian-Thai Development Company from Thailand and Max Myanmar Company from Myanmar implemented the project. However, the project was suspended due to the financial constraints.
In July 2015, Japan Government resigned the concession agreement to provide more than US$ 800 million for Dawei Region’s development plan including Dawei SEZ while Myanmar-Thailand-Japan discussed to restart the Dawei SEZ project
The new restarting project area includes six villages including more than 1,200 households, according to the Dawei SEZ Management Committee.
