Adoring Husband Plants 1.2 Million Sunflowers Across 80 Acres to Surprise Wife on 50th Anniversary

Every anniversary is a special occasion deserving of celebration. The number of years people are married also has a corresponding gift. For instance, 25 years of marriage is usually associated with silver, and 50 years is affiliated with gold. Rather than take the traditional route with golden jewelry, however, a farmer in Kansas found a unique way to make his anniversary one to remember. Lee Wilson planted 1.2 million sunflowers across 80 acres to surprise his wife, Renee.

The result of his planning and labor clearly worked as a video of the yellow field looks like a magical sight. Almost as far as the eye can see, there are tall, vibrant sunflowers brightening the landscape. There are about 15,000 flowers per acre, making the blooms seem almost endless.

Renee was over the moon with her husband's thoughtful gift. “It made me feel very special. It couldn't have been a more perfect anniversary gift than a field of sunflowers,” she says.

The adorable couple have known each other since they were teenagers. “We met in high school. She couldn't date until she was 16, and I called her on her 16th birthday and that's when we started dating,” Wilson explains. “Our first date was a roller skating party, an FFA roller skating party in Harper, Kansas.” The two lovebirds have been together ever since, and even after 50 years of marriage, their affection for each other seems as strong as ever. The field of sunflowers will be in bloom for about another two weeks. They can be seen miles east of Pratt and along Highway 54.
