The UK isn’t short of supermarkets, with consumers able to pick from high-end options like Waitrose, nab bargains at budget retailers such as Aldi or Lidl, and shop everything in between.
But a new player is about to throw their hat into the ring, and it’s been hailed as a ‘game-changing’ concept.
British rap duo Casyo Valentine Johnson and Karl Dominic Wilson – better known as Krept & Konan – are launching a brand new inclusive supermarket called Saveways, which will be tailored to the needs of Black, Asian and ethnic communities.
The wholesale supermarket, which cost over £1million to get off the ground, will open in their hometown of Croydon in February and will sell a diverse range of items, including world foods, premium halal produce, ethnic hair and beauty products, as well as offering an onsite multi-faith prayer room.
While it’s not exactly a first for a UK supermarket, the heartwarming consideration is still fairly unique as the majority of stores don’t allow space for a sacred space.
Speaking to Metro, Casyo says as soon as he heard the pitch, he was immediately onboard.

Saveways, which is launching in partnership with entrepreneur Kaysor Ali, (the brand owner of the Steakout and Smacks Hamburgers franchises), will span 15,000 sq. ft and create more than 30 job opportunities in the area.
There will also be onsite parking available for more than 30 vehicles, as well as ‘modern shopping solutions’ such as click & collect and online ordering.
Products will also be available via delivery platforms such as Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat.
While inside the store, customers can expect to find a fresh and frozen exotic fish selection, fresh halal meat and poultry counter, fresh bakery selection, fresh fruit and vegetables, tinned, ambient, chilled and frozen foods from around the world, household essentials, and cosmetics.
