President Vladimir Putin was welcomed to Pyongyang with an opulent ceremony of white stallions, balloons and huge posters, marking his first visit to North Korea in a quarter of a century.
He was met with smiles and a hug from the leader, Kim Jong Un, and was to attend a tea party and a gala.
The two leaders also spoke for about two hours one-to-one.
One banner outside Pyongyang’s Suan International Airport read: “The friendship between North Korea and Russia is eternal.”
Another said: "We warmly welcome comrade Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin."
The 105-storey pyramid skyscraper, which has been under construction since 1987, glowed with LED lights saying “Welcome Putin” and “Friendship”. Putin gave Kim a luxury Aurus limousine, Russian state media reported, citing Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.
The two were pictured in the car, with Putin in the driver's seat, but it is not known whether this was a newly-gifted car, said the BBC.
In February, Putin gifted Kim another Russian-made Auruses - the type used by the Russian leader himself.
Putin was also said to have given Kim a tea set, described as “very beautiful” by Ushakov according to Russia’s Tass state news agency, and an admiral’s dirk - a type of dagger.

Ushakov also said Putin was given “very good presents”, including artwork which he hinted were “related to the image” of the president, including busts. He said they were all “rather skilful,” Tass reported.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un gave Russian President Vladimir Putin a pair of Pungsan dogs, a local breed, state media KCNA reported Thursday.
Kim and Putin were seen looking at the dogs, who were tied to a rose-covered fence, during a segment aired on the state-controlled Korean Central Television on Thursday.
