Singapore has been ranked as the second safest city in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Safe Cities Index on 29th August. Tokyo holds the title as the safest city for the third straight time while Osaka ranked third. Six Asia Pacific (APAC) cities placed in the top ten, including Melbourne (10th), Seoul (8th) and Sydney (5th), reported Singapore Business Review. The ranking means Singapore received perfect scores for their continuity management plans, institutional capacity, disaster-risk informed development and pedestrian friendliness. It also indicates that the city-state possesses strong personal security inputs characterised by policing that has high-levels...

It’s considered the most contaminated site in the southern hemisphere and one of the most toxic in the world, but for some reason tourists just can’t stay away from the abandoned mining town of Wittenoom, deep in Western Australia’s remote Pilbara region. In its heyday, between 1930 and 1966, Wittenoom was home to around 20,000 people, most of whom worked in the now abandoned nearby mines, extracting deadly asbestos every day. Today, it’s a ghost town surrounded by large ‘Danger’ signs designed to keep people as far away as possible. Even though asbestos mining ceased decades ago, Wittenoom is still surrounded by around three million tonnes of asbestos...

Varosha is an abandoned southern quarter of the Cypriot city of Famagusta. Before the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, it was the modern tourist area of the city. Its inhabitants fled during the invasion, when it came under Turkish control, and it has remained abandoned and under the occupation of the Turkish Armed Forces ever since. As of 2019, the quarter continues to be uninhabited and is described as a ghost town. Entry is forbidden to the public. In the early 1970s, Famagusta was the number-one tourist destination in Cyprus. To cater to the increasing number of tourists, many new high-rise buildings and hotels were constructed. During its heyday, Varosha was not only the...

Singapore emerged as the world’s third costliest city for expats to live in, up from fourth place last year, on the back of rising affluence and sustained demand in quality housing, Mercer’s latest Cost of Living Survey found. Hong Kong continued to top the ranking, followed by Tokyo. Completing the top five list are Seoul and Zurich. Mercer noted that while the study is denominated in US dollars, currency fluctuation was not a factor for Singapore. And despite the high-cost of living, many organisations continue to see a strong business rationale for moving talent to the city-state, said Mario Ferraro, global mobility practice leader for Asia, Middle East and Africa at...
