India's health minister has said the country is likely to have a Covid-19 vaccine by March next year, adding that up to 300m citizens will have been vaccinated by September.
Harsh Vardhan said the government was preparing a data bank of those to be prioritised for immunisation, including healthcare and frontline workers and the elderly.
"We know it's a humongous task to implement this," Mr Vardhan told AAj Tak, a television channel, adding that work on a vaccine distribution plan started three months ago.
India, a big vaccine manufacturer, is working on 30 candidates, five of which are in clinical trials. India has recorded more than 9m cases, the second highest in the world.
The country is grappling with a fresh surge in infections, which has been attributed to large gatherings during the festive and wedding seasons, winter and air pollution.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding a meeting of state chief ministers on Tuesday to discuss plans for vaccine distribution.
