The construction of Yangon elevated expressway project will affect more than 1,000 buildings, according to a land acquisition and resettlement plan for the project.
The land acquisition will involve more than 1000 private-owned buildings, 31 government-owned buildings and 79 vendor shops, according to the survey, which were conducted in five townships namely, Hlaing Tharyar, Hlaing, Mayangone, Yankin and South Okkalapa townships.
The impact on private properties will be the highest in Hlaing Tharyar township, with over 940 buildings, 47 in Mayangone and 28 in Hlaing Township, and out of 31 government buildings, Hlaing township raised a total of 17 buildings. It will affect 79 vendor shops, most of them in Hlaingtharya township. Japanese JICA has studied the project in detail and it is scheduled to begin the phase 1 of the project in 2021.
The project will be 18 kilometers (over 11 miles) in length, with the land needed for the project to be 29 meters (95 feet) wide at the Pathein Road and 22 meters (72 feet) at the Parami Road, according to the Yangon City Development Committee. Therefore, more than 54 acres of land have been confiscated in Hlaing Tharyar Station. The project will include 14 meters from either side of the railway line along the Yangon-Pathein Road and will be 11 meters (36 feet) wide at the either side of the Parami Road.
