Australia’s highest skyscraper will also be one of its greenest.
Dutch architectural firm UNStudio and Australia's Cox Architecture jointly won a competition on August 15 to design a AUD2-billion (USD1.4 billion), mixed-used project for developer Beulah International.
Green Spine, the winning proposal for the Southbank by Beulah competition, will comprise two skyscrapers. One will shoot more than 356 metres (1,168 feet) into the Melbourne skyline — the highest building in the continent. The shorter tower will stand 252.2 metres high.
The project will have eclipsed the 322-metre height record set by the Q1 tower in Gold Coast when it breaks ground in 2020. Beulah International executive director Adelene Teh called Green Spine an “elegant visual beacon” in the Southbank precinct.
True to its name, the proposal features twisting backbones of foliage-rich balconies, terraces and gardens running the height of the buildings alongside geometric glass facades.
The Future Botanic Garden, a "stunning publicly accessible garden in the sky," will crown the taller skyscraper. In creating the competition entry, Cox Architecture director Philip Rowe highlighted the importance of imbuing more green spaces into Melbourne’s civic infrastructure. Ref: Propertyreport
