The tiny European country that's the world's richest with free public transport

When someone tries to think of the world’s richest country, nations like the US, China and Monaco may spring to mind.

Yet, none of those countries are wealthier than a tiny European nation right in the middle of the continent.

Luxembourg is the world's richest country and offers its residents and tourists not only a high standard of living but also free public transport.

With a GDP higher than China and the United States - GDP being the most common measure for the size of an economy - the small European nation consistently tops global wealth rankings.

Luxemburg is situated in northwestern Europe and is bordered by Belgium, France and Germany and is home to fewer than 700,000 people.

While Luxembourg’s wealth is largely driven by its robust financial services sector, the country has diversified its economy over recent decades.

Investment management, tourism, logistics and even steel production now play important roles in its GDP.

What’s more, one of the best features of the country is its free public transport system.

Since February 2020, all buses, trains, and trams have been free for both residents and tourists.

The initiative, which aims to reduce traffic and encourage sustainability, has made getting around Luxembourg simple and cost-effective. While first-class tickets still require payment, the majority of the network is accessible at no cost. The country’s transport system is also highly connected internationally.

Luxemburg has direct links to neighboring Belgium, France, and Germany, including access to high-speed trains like Germany’s ICE and France’s TGV.
