Aaron Rowsell, of Jonestown, Texas roughly 30 miles outside of Austin, has been building a three-story home overlooking Lake Travis – but it’s unlike any other house in the area.
That’s solely due to what the house is built out of: foam. Rowsell told Fox affiliate KXAN that he first heard of homes being built out of foam approximately 20 years ago.
He knew then and there that he wanted to build his own. “I think the neighbors might have thought I was crazy when they saw the truckloads of foam pull up,” he told the outlet.
Rowsell is building the home with the help of Phoenix-based company Strata International Group Inc.
The company reportedly developed the jaw-dropping technology that carries more benefits than one might think. The building technique is called Saebi Alternative Building System, and it creates large blocks of foam that are approximately 98% made of air.
These blocks, which are 100% recycable, reportedly can be shaped and glued together into any shape – such as a house – through a fast curing liquid foam.
Not only are the walls made of foam, but the stairs and floor as well.
After the foam is molded into the right home design, it is then reportedly covered with sabscrete – a patent concrete mixture. This mixture covered the entire home to add structure to its base, KXAN reported.
The company has been using this technique for approximately two decades, finishing the first home in 2004.
The vice president of the company, Amir Saebi, told KXAN that this allows them to build homes with less people.
