Buying property is likely to be the single most expensive thing most people will ever purchase.
So, for most, forking out a hefty sum would need to be something well-worth it. But it seems one recent buyer’s priorities may differ slightly from the conventional.
A run-down gun tower located on the Thames in Kent has been snapped up by an American buyer.
But its doer-upper state isn’t the only catch. The Thames tower can only be accessed at low tide via causeway twice a day – or by boat the rest of the time.

Nevertheless, this wasn’t enough to put the buyer off, who paid £159,000 for the building – £9,000 more than the asking price.
The standout feature of the property is its 168-year-old history, as the military building defended the nation during the first and second World Wars.
Not to mention the fact it comes with the iconic address: Number 1 The Thames.
It was the last gun tower of its kind to be built, constructed to protect the nearby military dockyards against French invasion.
However, it is a pretty remote spot, being four-and-a-half miles from the nearest train station of Swale.
One thing’s clear, the buyer needs to spend a large amount to repair and return it to its former glory.
