The story of a pink Tesla Model Y caught under the rubble in China made international news over the weekend. Still, the car has a far more unusual story, as it appears its owner is one of the most unlucky people on Earth.
Tesla EVs have always been among the safest on the road, widely acclaimed for their outstanding safety. The glass roof, especially, has been touted as being able to withstand four times the car's weight, or 19,188 pounds (8,700 kg) in the case of the Tesla Model Y, according to the IIHS. This is puzzling, considering that most people believe glass is more fragile than steel. Indeed, the glass roof does break, but it can still withstand more weight than most vehicles whose rooftops are made of steel.
This strength has been demonstrated time and again in real life, as Teslas have crashed and heavier vehicles landed on top of them. Teslas also seem unaffected by poles or trees that fell onto them, as the glass roof adequately protected the passengers so the doors could still open after the accident. In another proof that Tesla's glass roof is really something else, a Tesla Model Y in China remained almost intact after a wall collapsed on it after heavy rains in the region.
According to local media, a heavy rain storm caused a roadside wall to collapse. The cars that were parked alongside the road were crushed by the rubble. A pink Tesla Model Y was the notable exception, despite a heavy column that fell on its roof. Thanks to its sturdy glass roof, the Tesla's cabin retained its original shape, allowing the doors to open normally. Although the stories shared in the media and on social networks speak about the impressive safety record afforded by the glass roof, there's another interesting story about this particular car.
The owner of the pink Tesla Model Y must be the most unlucky car owner in the world. A Chinese lady bought the Model Y in May this year, and during the four-month ownership, she experienced all the nightmares possible. According to a video shared on Chinese social media, her car's tires have been nailed, the door dinged, and the front bumper and the hood were seriously affected in a crash. The Model Y has also been sideswiped twice, and the rear window shattered after a tile fell onto it.
Interestingly, the young driver caused none of the accidents that affected the pink Model Y. It was all bad luck, we could say, which culminated with the car being totaled by the collapsed wall. The number of events detailed here is astounding, considering that the owner only bought the Model Y four months ago. Hopefully, her luck will improve after this last disaster, and her next car will have an uneventful life.
