LOS ANGELES: Aon Centre, the third-tallest tower in Los Angeles, has sold for US$147.8mil – about 45% less than its last purchase price in 2014 – as office values continue to suffer from high vacancies and financing costs. The sale is the largest office deal this year in downtown Los Angeles, which has been among the hardest-hit US office markets since the pandemic, as remotework becomes more popular and escalating interest rates drive down values, wiping out owners’ equity. “With a new low basis and a well-capitalised owner, Aon Centre will be competitively positioned to attract and retain tenants who desire a well-amenitised skyline tower in the heart of...

Western Australia may soon be home to the world’s tallest wooden building, after authorities in Perth green-lit plans for a 191.2-meter-tall (627-foot) “hybrid” tower constructed using mass timber. On Thursday, Perth’s Metro Inner-South Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP) approved Grange Development’s proposal for the skyscraper, currently dubbed the C6 building, which would stand nearly twice as high as the current record holder. The developers say 42% of the proposed tower will be constructed from timber, with the columns and core made of reinforced concrete. (Credit-Finbarr FallonBjarke Ingels Group) In case you’re planning a trip to the other side of the world’s richest city-state, the “biophilic” CapitaSpring tower in Singapore is now fully bursting with a publically accessible urban forest. In Singapore’s business district, you have to go 17 to 20 stories above street level to find wide open greenery. On CapitaSpring’s “Green Oasis” floor, accessible to the public, a spiral path winds through gardens and small replicants of tropical forests, like the kind that stood there before Singapore came to be. On the roof, three rooftop market gardens supply fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers to...

IT’S THE MOST wonderful time of the year. That's right, the moment where we look ahead to the tallest skyscrapers set to complete in 2023 has arrived! Comparing this list to last year's, there are some notable differences. China has dominated the skies for most of the last decade, but we’re now seeing that begin to wane. The country has less entries on this list than before and the skyscrapers it does have are substantially shorter than their predecessors. That's partly due to the country’s strict new rules that ban the construction of skyscrapers in cities of less than 3M people and restrict them to just 250-metres in larger cities, unless there are extenuating...

With a height-to-width ratio of 24:1, Steinway Tower, an 84-story luxury apartment building in Manhattan, is officially the world’s thinnest skyscraper. Steinway Tower is an impressive architectural achievement. Not only is it the third-tallest building in the Western Hemisphere – after One World Trade Center (1,776 feet) and Central Park Tower (1,550 feet) – but it’s actually the most slender skyscraper in the world. Despite standing a dizzying 1,428-feet-tall, Steinway Tower is just 60 feet wide. It’s so thin that The Guardian newspaper has dubbed it “the coffee stirrer”. For comparison, Steinway Tower is as wide as a bowling alley is...

Apair of skyscrapers are set to become the tallest prefabricated buildings in the world. And while the two 192-meter-tall (630 feet) towers will rise in densely populated Singapore, large parts of the structures are being built over the border in Malaysia. The residential project, named Avenue South Residences, will see 988 apartments formed from almost 3,000 vertically stacked "modules." The firm behind the project, ADDP Architects, says the building method, known as Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction (PPVC), is less labor-intensive and can help reduce waste and noise pollution. The individual modules are factory-made in Senai, Malaysia, where a series of six-sided boxes...
