The British Consulate General in New York has purchased a 12-room penthouse in Manhattan’s 50 United Nations Plaza for $15.9 million.
The penthouse had been listed since 2016 and previously asked $18.95 million, according to public listing records.
The deed, which lists the consulate as the buyer, was signed by David Hunt, who served as the British ambassador to Lithuania from 2011 to 2015, according to PropertyShark records.
Michael Thatam, the British ambassador to the U.S., was also granted power of attorney, according to a record from March 2018.
A spokesperson for the U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in addition to being consul general Antony Phillipson's residence, the property will "be used to support his work to help British businesses as Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for North America."
They also said the consul general's current residence, at an undisclosed location, will be listed for sale.
Located in 50 United Nations Plaza, a new development on Manhattan’s East Side, the apartment is a 5,893-square-foot full-floor penthouse and was sold on March 15. According to the listing, the home has five bedrooms, two “staff bedrooms” and six-and-a-half bathrooms.
The 73-foot-wide living and entertaining space has views of the East River and the United Nations Secretariat Building.
Mr. Phillipson won't be the first diplomat to reside in the building.
The U.S. government rents a penthouse for the U.N. ambassador, The New York Times reported, and the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar owns several units at 50 United Nations Plaza, including a penthouse, according to PropertyShark records.
Completed in 2015, the 43-story building was developed by the Zeckendorf family, whose other notable Manhattan residential buildings include 15 Central Park West and 520 Park Ave.
A rep for Zeckendorf Marketing, who had the listing, said the company is "delighted" with the sale, adding that "50 United Nations Plaza is now over 83% sold."
