Nyaung-U Airport To Be Upgraded By Japanese Loans
Nyaung-U airport will be rebuilt to become the first green airport in Southeast Asia, said U Win Khant, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation and Communication.
“The green airport is a very interesting project which is in line with Bagan’s eco-friendliness. It will be a project that our country is proud of. Local and foreign visitors will increase,” said U Win Khant.
The project is to be implemented by a common agreement between the Ministry and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The plan model, operation model and the project potential will be analyzed by Japan. The upgraded runway will be funded by JICA. To finance the passenger lounge, investors from Japan will be invited, he added.
For the expansion of the airport, eight acres of farmland were confiscated to build the passenger lounge. If the regional government and the public object to it, the green airport project may be cancelled. The green airport is powered by solar energy and is environmental friendly, which is the prime reason for the initiative, he said.
The ministry is cooperating with the Ministry of Religion and Culture, the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation and the Mandalay regional government to acquire the land needed for the project.
At present, there are a total of 33 airports using in Myanmar including 3 international airports and 30 domestic airports.
