This is the Busan floating city, a metropolis that will house up to 100,000 people.
Called Oceanix Busan, it’s about to be built off the coast of Busan in South Korea.
(The city will consist of a network of islands that inhabitants can access using paddle boats)
(With nowhere to expand, rapid urban population growth is pushing people closer to the water - and floating cities could be the answer)
((THE WORLD'S FIRST FLOATING CITY))
Prototype location: Busan, South Korea
Capacity: 10,000 residents on 75 hectares
Projected cost: $200 million (£150 million)
Completion date: 2025
Developers have chosen to build the city off the coast of Busan for two reasons.
It’s a large coastal city, so at high risk of rising sea levels, and it’s also home to the country’s largest port.
The company said work is still ongoing 'to determine who the residents will be and how they will be selected'.
Each island will be hexagonal in shape and contain a limestone coating that's two to three times harder than concrete, but still buoyant, according to Business Insider.
Cages under each platform could be used to keep scallops, kelp, or other seafood, while waste from the fish could be used to fertilise plants.
Organic produce will be efficiently grown in aeroponic and aquaponic systems, complemented by traditional outdoor farms and greenhouses.
Aaeroponics involves growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil.
(The floating city is envisaged as 'a flood-proof infrastructure')

In order to make it float, the ground will be made using thick but hollow platforms.
They’ll be built out of concrete (yes, concrete) with air pockets that trap air underneath to keep the city afloat.
The project, which is backed by the UN, is being developed by Oceanix together with architectural firms Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Samoo Architects & Engineers.
