2024 North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year: Meet the Semifinalists

Twenty-five vehicles are still in the fight for the 2024 North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle Awards. Here are the lists of those which have reached the semifinals and are racing for this year's trophy.

The jury chose the 25 out of a list of 52 and revealed them during the kickoff press event of the Detroit Auto Show at the Huntington Place Convention Center in Downtown Detroit. The lists include ten cars, ten utility vehicles, and ten trucks. This time, with the automakers striving to set up all-electric portfolios, more than half of vehicles still in the run feature an electrified powertrain.

There are eight electric cars left in the semifinals: the BMW i5, the Hyundai Ioniq 6, the Chevrolet Silverado EV, the Chevrolet Blazer EV, the Chevrolet Equinox EV, the Genesis Electrified GV70, the Kia EV9, and the Volvo EX30 crossover.

Hybrids have their fair share of chances among the semifinalists. This category is represented by the Toyota Prius/Toyota Prime, the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, the Dodge Hornet, the Mazda CX-90, the Toyota Grand Highlander, the Toyota Crown, the BMW 5 Series, the Honda Accord, and the Hyundai Kona. Many of these cars are also available as ICE-powered models.

Next stage of the competition is cutting seven of them from every list, leaving just three in the race for the 2024 North American Car of the Year (NACTOY) award. The three for each category will be announced on November 16 in Los Angeles.

A jury made up of 50 members, who are respected automotive journalists will be analyzing the finalists. Coming from print, online, and broadcast media from the United States and Canada, they will all have the opportunity to drive all of the vehicles on the lists during a comparison driving event in Michigan, later this year.

After completing their individual and collective evaluations, they will cast their votes to determine the three finalist vehicles for each of the categories. The winners will be announced in Detroit, on January 4, 2024.

Last year, the juries voted for the Acura Integra as the winner of the Car of the Year award. The electric Ford F-150 Lightning was designated the Truck of the Year, while another zero-emission model, the Kia EV6, left home with the Utility Vehicle of the Year trophy.
