Rishi Sunak was accused of being “out of touch” tonight after it emerged he owns four cars rather than the modest family hatchback he has admitted to.
The millionaire Chancellor claimed today that his family drives a Volkswagen Golf which they are understood to use to get around London.
But it is by far the cheapest of the quartet of vehicles the top Tory keeps at his homes across the globe.
Sources said Mr Sunak also has a high-specification Range Rover, which costs from £94,000 new, for use at his grand North Yorkshire constituency home.
They claimed he owns two further vehicles – a top-of-the-range Lexus and a BMW – which are kept at his luxury Santa Monica pad.
A new Lexus can cost between £50,000 and £80,000 while BMWs start from £30,000 and go well over six-figures for top end models.
He used £30.01 of his own cash to fill up the car at a Sainsbury’s but later admitted the car belonged to supermarket employee.
During a grilling over his mini-Budget, which has been accused of failing to provide enough support for struggling families, Mr Sunak told MPs he has a pre-2019 VW Golf.
Treasury select committee member Siobhan McDonagh had asked whether his family had a Rio, to which he replied: “We have a Golf”.
