Last person living on deserted housing estate that is set for demolition spends £2,000 redecorating his flat after refusing council demands to move out - despite being offered £35K and two years' rent to go

The last person living on a deserted housing estate set for demolition has spent nearly £2,000 redecorating his home. Nick Wisniewski, 67, has no neighbours in the 128 flats around him after eight blocks on Stanhope Place in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, were scheduled for demolition. He has refused to leave despite the council offering £35,000 and two years' rent. Mr Wisniewski blasted council chiefs who he said haven't been in touch since November 2021. The retired TSB bank worker added that an area of the car park outside of his flat has also become an eyesore with piled up rubbish and overgrown grass.   (Nick Wisniewski, 67, has no neighbours in the 128 flats...

Back on track! Spain's Canfranc was once Europe's second-largest railway station - now it's a first-class hotel

Once it was called The Titanic of the Mountains — a grandiose, lavish building which was the second largest railway station in Europe (Leipzig was the biggest). Canfranc International station, more than 3,280ft above sea level, opened in 1928 — an outlandishly ambitious project which linked the French and Spanish Pyrenees with a five-mile cross-border tunnel. But even its famed grandeur — it is ten times bigger than St Pancras, has 365 windows and a 790ft platform — failed to save it from the ravages of a disastrous fire, the Spanish Civil War, World War II, and the issue of French and Spanish railway gauges being of different widths, which meant all freight and...

The mayor of a small Polish town is offering a reward to the next couple who has a baby boy since they've only had girls for a decade

For nearly a decade, not a single boy has been born in Miejsce Odrzańskie, a small town in southern Poland. In an effort to encourage the local couples to try for a boy, the town's mayor, Rajmund Frischko, is offering a reward for the next couple who has a boy, though he wouldn't specify what exactly that reward would entail, The First News reported. "I think the situation is unusual and it is worth trying to find out why," he said. "For my part, I have decided to reward the parents of the first boy born. I will not reveal exactly how, but I assure you that the gift will be attractive."     (The town's mayor, Rajmund Frischko, is offering a reward for the next couple who...

Nicole Kidman reveals she was haunted by the ghosts of Thailand's Death Railway on the set of film charting the horrors faced by Allied soldiers during World War Two

Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth stood by the cutting at Kanchanaburi in Thailand — site of the infamous Death Railway — lost in a moment of reverence. A lifetime ago, during World War Two, Allied soldiers — mainly British and Australian — cut through the malaria-infested jungle and rocks in order to construct a bridge across this ravine. Many died as a result of the fierce heat, harsh conditions and cruelty of their Japanese captors. One of the those who survived was Eric Lomax, a Scottish-born second lieutenant. For years, he was haunted by what happened but wouldn’t speak of it — until he married Patti, who helped him fight the demons that gave him...

Bill and Melinda Gates' 26-year-old daughter has moved into a $51million six-bedroom penthouse in Manhattan with her new husband - despite her dad pledging to give away his wealth to avoid 'distorting' his children. Jennifer Gates, the eldest daughter of Bill and his ex-wife Melinda, is living in the Tribeca home after it was purchased last month by a Seattle-based trust linked to Gates, the New York Post reported. The 8,900-square-foot apartment, which has 3,400 square feet of outdoor space, was previously owned by Lewis Hamilton and is the largest in a starry luxury apartment building at 443 Greenwich Street. Real estate company buys historic Welsh miners' village of 16 houses for £1million - leaving residents 'facing a 60% rise in rent as part of a bid to drive them out'

Tenants in a beautiful Welsh village are facing 'a 60 per cent rise' in their rents after their homes were snapped up by a London-based property firm for £1million.The village of Aberllefenni in Gwynedd, north Wales, was built for workers at a former slate mine dating back to the 16th century. The properties were finally sold after six years on the market to property developers Walsh Investment Properties.
