South Okkalapa was one of the satellite towns established in 1959. South Okkalapa Township is located in the eastern part of Yangon and area is 7.70 km. The township comprises 13 wards, and shares borders with North Okkalapa Township in the north, North Dagon Township in the east, Yankin Township in the west, and Kamaryut Township, and Thingangyun Township in the south.

The township has 24 primary schools, one middle school and five high schools.  The North Okkalapa General Hospital, an affiliated teaching hospital of the University of Medicine 2, Yangon serves South Okkalapa as well. The South Okkalapa Women's and Children's Hospital is a major specialized hospital in the city. Wayzayandar road and Parami road , main roads of Yangon are crossing  through this township. Parami Bus Terminal is also situated in this township. Finally, South Okkalapa township is not crowded population township , unused yards and detached houses are remaining available in.
