POV: buying a plot of land with the dream of building your forever home, then you return to find a $1.5 million house built on it. This is what actually happened to the vacant lot bought by Dr Daniel Kenigsberg. The doctor, who specializes in endocrinology, is taking the owner of the ‘cuckoo’ house to court. The home ended his long-term hopes of owning a house next door to his childhood home. Situated in New Haven, Connecticut, Kenigsberg bought the half-acre strip at 51 Sky Top Terrace back in 1991. His father bought the home nearby for just $5,000 in 1953 – so it had sentimental significance. His family even bought the lot directly from Eleazar Parmly Jr....

Mark Zuckerberg’s job can be hard to describe to a child. But one of his favorite hobbies these days—producing beef—is easier to understand. The Meta CEO recently revealed that his daughter misunderstood what his main job was. “For a while, she just thought that I was a cattle rancher,” the Facebook cofounder told Morning Brew Daily on Friday. While Zuckerberg’s fascination with martial arts has been well documented, he’s also intent on producing some of the best beef on the planet—not to sell commercially, but to enjoy with friends and family. The tech billionaire is raising cattle on Ko’olau Ranch, a property he owns on the...

No regrets…’ says Steve Riseley, looking up at the castle – Castle Elvira in Italy’s Puglia region – that he now calls home. ‘Too much blood, sweat and tears, but no regrets.’It wasn’t always this way. Halfway through the four-year, multimillion-pound project to restore a castle that had been abandoned for more than a hundred years, vandalised, looted and generally destroyed, he started to wish he and his artist/film-maker husband Harvey B Brown had never seen the place. ‘There were times I wished I could have given up, but we couldn’t, because we were too far in,’ says Steve. Thanks to the couple’s tenacity,...

Hyper-empathetic? Get the tissues out, because a remote cottage dubbed the UK’s ‘loneliest’ home has been taken off the market for one heartbreaking reason. …nobody wanted to buy it (sob). The abandoned three-bedroom property, in Whernside, North Yorkshire, has no mains electricity or water and was originally listed for sale in summer 2022. Priced at £300,000, it was even lowered to £250,000 in May 2023 in an attempt to sell it, but to no avail. It’s fairly inaccessible considering it’s a 20-minute walk from the nearest parking spot. (The property was put up for sale for £300,000 .Image: Fisher Hopper /...

Steve Jobs is not just a 21st-century fashion icon but also an inspiration for all the techies around the world who aspire to one day make it as an entrepreneur. While Job’s fans know even the smallest details about his life and success principles, many overlook his intriguing antic of conducting a “beer test” during his interviews for Apple. It is said that the late Apple CEO used a “beer test” before hiring candidates for his company. Under normal circumstances, a job interview goes about in a rather mundane fashion. The setup often involves a face-to-face conversation with the candidate, with occasional tasks involved for the interviewee to...

In 2018, my friend sent me a listing for Cerro Gordo, an abandoned mining town in California. "This might be your next project," he joked. The idea of a remote town in the American West was very alluring to me. It reminded me of the old TV westerns my grandfather watched every day. I was running a pretty popular bed and breakfast in Austin, but it felt like I was just searching for something to shake me up from the routine monotony. Buying this ghost town has done that. It cost $1.4 million — more than half was a loan from a hard money lender. The rest was mostly split between my friend and me, but a few other friends also chipped in. On the surface, you understand it's going to...

I'm a millennial, which means I, like so many in my generation, have had a rough time financially. I'm facing student loans, high inflation, and stagnant wages. The cost of living is high, and unfortunately I'm not a trust-fund kid with wealthy relatives. While other people my age may be sacrificing dreams of homeownership, children, and a career they love, one trick up my sleeve has helped me more than anything: polyamory. My husband, Daniel, and I agreed to try polyamory in December 2015. We'd married in 2008 and had two children by 2013. For the first few years we tended to date other people who were also in primary relationships with other people. (Jared Soares for...

SAND ISLAND, MI – An island in the middle of Lake Superior needs lighthouse keepers for this summer. The National Park Service is looking for a set of volunteers to live on Sand Island, part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, for three weeks this summer, from June 10 to July 1. However, those dates are flexible as “Gichigami (Lake Superior) makes that decision for us,” officials said, noting that weather conditions could cause the start and end dates to change. Volunteers must stay on the island the entire time, and be prepared to stay longer depending on the weather, officials said. The position includes being the primary contact for visitors on the island,...
