Ghost village with 17 buildings goes on sale for £154,000

If buying a house in London is completely out of your price range, why not buy an entire village in Spain instead?

While the average price of a home in the UK capital is now £523,400, according to Zoopla, the ‘ghost village’ of Matandrino, which is on the outskirts of Madrid, provides the opportunity to snap up a real bargain.

Here you will get a lot more bang for your buck, by becoming the owner of the six-century-old location that is just 4,251 square miles.

For £154,000 you will get all 17 buildings in the village, which is about one hour and 30 minutes from the Spanish capital by car.

But there is a catch. The majority of the buildings are practically ruins, unrecognisable from a time when nine households lived there.

Former inhabitants mainly did agricultural work such as livestock farming, as well as farming wheat and barley.

The village was originally called Mata Endrino, likely because of the ubiquitous blackthorns in the area.

Dating back to the 15th century, several livestock pens remain among the village’s ruins.

By the mid-20th century, Matandrino had 40 residents, all of whom eventually packed up their stuff and left the village for good.

This is not the first time the village has been put on the market. Its former owner, Roque Benito, acquired it in 2005 with plans to develop an education-based project.

However his plans came to a halt due to the 2008 financial crash.
